August and September is tomato season in the Midwest. I’m lucky enough to have access to a farmer’s market nearly every day this time of year. And we go crazy buying tomatoes. I have learned to successfully transport a tomato from market to home is a near sport (my tip: I pick smaller tomatoes, as they have less of a chance to bust). A perfect BLT is all about the quality of each ingredient, of which tomatoes are the hardest to procure.
My perfect BLT sandwich includes great lettuce, thick cut bacon from the farmers market, simple white bread, tomatoes and peanut butter. I know the peanut butter seems a little trendy, and it is, but my Mom has been making me BLT’s with peanut butter since I was a kid. We would also have a choice of BLT’s with mayo, as I’m not sure Dad was on board with BLT’s and peanut butter.
Go to a Farmer’s market. Make a BLT sandwich. Try it with peanut butter-you won’t go back.
